When and where did streetwear originate? Streetwear started in the California surf and skate circles and was originally known as skatewear and surfwear depending on what particular circle the clothing came from. With the birth of Stussy, others began to follow suit and the two designs became closely interlinked. By the mid 1980's more brands had started to appear and became common place as they spread through the USA. Just a matter of time and the rest of the world caught on. As his status as a good surfer started to raise, so did the popularity of his clothing and boards. Japan became the next market to catch on to the streetwear craze and as always they came with their own unique styles to the table. This somehow influenced streetwear as a whole and the different types of styles and designs were soon adopted worldwide. Many people speculate about when and how the styles originated but it is clear that it started at the end of the 1970's and the early 1980's. It was an exciting time with the entrance of punk and what would become hip hop. Today streetwear has crossed boundaries going into different areas of the fashion industry. Sunglasses and bags are becoming even more associated within the style. With the passing by of time, streetwear has also become more prominent.
