Does Streewear Portray Double Standard?

Clothes make the man, they say, and I personally think that this statement could not have been put any better. When you dress up in a suit, it is assumed that you are headed to the office, that you are a serious person. When you dress up in African attire, it shows how proud you are proud of you heritage, but when you dressed in streetwear it is immediately assumed that you are young and therefore immature. With this assumption comes a different kind of treatment, one that can be best described as condescending.

In today’s society, you will only be respected by the older generation if you suit up. Dressing in baggy jeans and an oversized belt being the streetwear fashion reflect poorly on your level of maturity. Getting a white collar job requires you to be in a white collar to begin with! The only people who are exempted from this rule are probably the musicians. They can dress up in whichever manner they choose to, and still they will get where they want to go. The office doors are never slammed in their faces. Apparently, being artistes, they are allowed self expression, however it manifests itself, not too mention that they have tons of cash and influence on the majority of the population, the youth. So unless you are a person of great influence, or have money in abundance, you will probably have to conform to the rule of suits and ties, this is what makes the world go round.
